Aurora Police Officer Fatally Shoots Man After Traffic Stop Altercation

An Aurora police officer fatally shot a man following a traffic stop and subsequent car crash near East 6th Avenue and Interstate 225. The incident began when the suspect ignored commands to stop, struck two vehicles, and later exited his car, refusing to comply with the officer's orders. During a physical altercation, the officer noticed a firearm on the ground, and the suspect appeared to move toward it in an aggressive stance while shouting at bystanders. The officer, working alone, backed away and fired one to three rounds, striking the man who was declared dead at the scene. Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain emphasized a thorough and transparent investigation involving body camera footage, external review, and cooperation with the district attorney's office. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation by the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
