Salmonella Sickens Over 260 Across US, UK in Multiple Outbreaks

Several salmonella outbreaks have recently affected communities in the United States and the United Kingdom, linked to contaminated food products and events. In the UK, four people fell ill after consuming an eggshell membrane supplement contaminated with multidrug resistant Salmonella strains, including Salmonella Enteritidis, prompting a recall of the product. In the US, a large salmonella outbreak in California linked to raw milk products sickened over 160 people, predominantly children, marking one of the largest raw milk-related outbreaks in recent history. Additionally, in Accomack County, Virginia, more than 50 individuals became ill following a family reunion potluck, with health officials suspecting improper food storage as the cause. Public health authorities emphasize that vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals face greater risks of severe illness from salmonella infections. Preventative measures including proper food handling, hand hygiene, and avoiding consumption of unpasteurized products are crucial to reducing salmonella spread and infection severity.
