Zambian Government, Lungu Family Resolve Funeral Dispute Ahead State Funeral
After the death of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu in South Africa, a dispute arose between his family and the Zambian government over funeral arrangements, particularly regarding the involvement of current President Hakainde Hichilema, whom Lungu had wished to exclude from the proceedings. Following intensive mediation led by regional leaders, an agreement was reached allowing President Hichilema to preside over a state funeral scheduled for June 22, after the body is flown to Lusaka and lies in state at both Lungu's residence and a public venue for three days. The funeral program includes full military honors upon arrival and public mourning, with burial planned for the following Monday at a location yet to be confirmed. Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu apologized for delays, emphasizing respect for Lungu's final wishes, while the government appealed for national unity and thanked the public for their patience. Lungu, who served from 2015 to 2021 and lost the 2021 election to Hichilema, remained a polarizing figure in Zambian politics. The resolution brings closure to a tense period of uncertainty and allows the nation to properly honor the former president.
