Multi-State DMV Text Scam Threatens License Suspensions
Multiple states, including New Hampshire, Alabama, and Michigan, are currently experiencing widespread text message scams falsely claiming to be from their respective Departments of Motor Vehicles or equivalent agencies, warning recipients of license suspensions or unpaid violations that require immediate payment. New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella clarified that the state's DMV only sends appointment reminders and never requests payments or enforcement actions via text, urging residents to delete such fraudulent messages without responding. Similarly, Alabama's Law Enforcement Agency emphasized there is no 'Alabama DMV' and warned against clicking links or providing personal information in texts threatening license suspension or vehicle registration cancellation. Michigan officials also alerted residents to a scam involving false toll payment demands, noting that the state does not have toll roads and the SOS (Secretary of State) would never request money via text. Authorities across these states advise the public to be vigilant, avoid clicking suspicious links, not to provide personal or financial details, and to report phishing attempts to appropriate agencies. These scams are designed to create a false sense of urgency and trick individuals into revealing sensitive information.
