Six England Water Firms Banned from Executive Bonuses for Sewage Pollution
Six of England's largest water companies—Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, Anglian Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities, and Southern Water—have been banned from awarding bonuses to senior executives for the 2024-25 financial year due to serious pollution breaches and failures in regulatory compliance. The ban, part of the Water (Special Measures) Act and enforced by Ofwat, targets executives who were in post during significant environmental offences, including multiple Category 1 pollution incidents and financial mismanagement. Notably, Yorkshire Water's CEO Nicola Shaw and CFO Paul Inman face bonus bans following a £40 million fine related to sewage pollution that severely damaged the region's waterways, while Wessex Water's CFO is banned due to criminal convictions for sewage spills that killed thousands of fish. Despite the ban, concerns remain that companies might compensate executives with increased salaries, a practice not currently prohibited by Ofwat. Environment Secretary Steve Reed emphasized that bonuses should reflect real performance, particularly in tackling pollution, and the government aims to restore public trust and improve the state of rivers, lakes, and seas. Over the past decade, these firms have paid out over £112 million in bonuses, fueling public outrage amid worsening water quality and infrastructure issues across England.
