UK Sanctions 25 People-Smugglers, Small Boat Supplier in Global Crackdown
The UK government has imposed sanctions on 24 individuals and one company involved in migrant smuggling across the English Channel, including gang leaders, corrupt police officers, fake passport suppliers, and a Chinese firm providing small boats. Key figures such as Albanian crime boss Bledar Lala, former police translator Alen Basil, and hawala banker Muhammed Khadir Pirot were named, with sanctions designed to freeze their UK assets and ban them from entering the country. The crackdown targets smuggling networks operating from the Balkans, Iraq, North Africa, and Asia, aiming to disrupt their financial operations and supply chains. Foreign Secretary David Lammy described the sanctions as a landmark effort to combat organized immigration crime and protect vulnerable migrants exploited by these gangs. The new regime follows a surge in Channel crossings, with nearly a 50% increase in migrants arriving in the first half of 2025, and includes measures against those facilitating cash transfers through the Hawala system and those supplying boats and forged documents. UK authorities continue to pursue these criminal networks globally to reduce irregular migration and safeguard Britain's borders.
