American Magic Withdraws From 38th America's Cup, Ending US Presence in Historic Yacht Race
American Magic, the New York Yacht Club–backed sailing team, has announced it will not compete in the 38th America’s Cup scheduled for 2027 in Naples, Italy, marking the first time in the event's 175-year history that no American boat will participate. Team Principal Doug DeVos cited that the current event structure and financial conditions do not support a highly competitive and sustainable campaign for American Magic. The decision follows ongoing concerns about transparency and cooperation, particularly with Team New Zealand, the defending champion and Challenger of Record, whose protocols and agreements with Italian organizers have been criticized by American Magic and other challengers. Despite withdrawing from the next Cup, American Magic remains committed to developing high-performance sailing programs in Pensacola, focusing on athlete development, technology, and international competition. The team has been instrumental in fostering elite American sailing talent and infrastructure and plans to continue these efforts through its Pensacola base and Olympic support programs. American Magic expressed gratitude to its supporters and reaffirmed its long-term dedication to competing and winning on the global sailing stage.
