Israeli Security Cabinet Approves Gaza City Occupation Amid Opposition Criticism
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has strongly condemned the Israeli Security Cabinet's decision to take control of Gaza City, calling it a disastrous move driven by far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich that will lead to the deaths of hostages and many Israeli soldiers, cost tens of billions of shekels, and cause Israel's diplomatic isolation. Lapid and other critics warn that the plan lacks a clear post-occupation strategy and risks trapping Israel in a prolonged and futile occupation, exactly the outcome Hamas desires. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticized Israel’s takeover plan, describing it as reckless and a dangerous escalation that would worsen the humanitarian crisis and undermine prospects for peace, marking a rare rebuke from a Western leader amidst growing international concern over Israel's actions in Gaza. Starmer highlighted Western double standards in supporting Israel militarily while largely ignoring the suffering and displacement of Palestinians. The Israeli military leadership has expressed opposition to the plan, with the IDF Chief of Staff warning of the many dangers, contrasting with the political push by Netanyahu's far-right coalition partners. Meanwhile, Israel faces international legal challenges, including war crimes allegations and a genocide case related to its Gaza campaign.
