Disney Animation Reveals Zootopia 2 Preview at Annecy Festival

Walt Disney Animation Studios has unveiled extensive details and footage of the eagerly awaited sequel "Zootopia 2" at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Directed by Jared Bush, who is also the studio's new chief creative officer, the film continues the story of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they go undercover and then become fugitives while investigating a reptile named Gary De'Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan. The sequel introduces new characters, including a conspiracy-minded beaver and a quokka therapist, with additional voice talent like Jean Reno and Quinta Brunson joining returning stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, and Shakira, who also recorded a new original song. Disney is incorporating a new animation system, Presto, for parts of the film, and animating reptiles, including snakes, presents unique challenges not previously tackled in CG. The story explores themes of partnership and trust as Judy and Nick navigate their differences and the complexities of their mission, while Disney emphasizes storytelling that resonates across diverse audiences through collaboration and genuine representation. Additionally, the studio announced that veteran writer and director Ron Clements is returning from retirement to mentor new creators, underscoring Disney's commitment to fresh voices and innovation.
