Malaysia plans direct KL-Bangkok cargo rail link to boost trade
Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to launch a direct cargo rail service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok later this year, aiming to boost bilateral trade and deepen ASEAN economic integration. The initiative, approved by both countries' cabinets and supported by their prime ministers, is expected to enhance regional connectivity, with potential links to Laos, China, and Central Asia. The two governments are also working to revive direct passenger rail services as a tourism product, utilizing existing railway tracks and offering a scenic, affordable alternative to air travel. Both nations are expediting two memorandums of understanding on cross-border transport—one for goods and another for passengers—to facilitate smoother logistics and travel, with plans to finalize them by July. In addition, discussions are underway to restore historical rail links, including the Bangkok-Butterworth route and the line between Sungai Kolok and Rantau Panjang, in alignment with Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link project. These collaborative efforts are expected to improve infrastructure, address freight challenges, and strengthen ties between Malaysia, Thailand, and the broader ASEAN region.
