Air India Crash Kills 270 After Ahmedabad Takeoff
An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, killing 270 people including 241 on board and 29 on the ground; only one passenger survived and is expected to be discharged soon. The aircraft struck a medical college hostel in a residential area, marking one of India's worst aviation disasters in recent history. Recovery teams continue to search the crash site, with many victims' bodies severely burned and requiring DNA identification, which has frustrated some relatives due to the process duration. In response, the Indian government formed a high-level multidisciplinary panel to investigate the root causes, including mechanical failure, human error, and regulatory compliance, while the aviation regulator ordered extended inspections of all Boeing 787 aircraft operated by local carriers. Air India has conducted safety checks on its Boeing 787 fleet and is working to complete checks on all planes, with the crash prompting the airline to offer interim compensation to victims' families and the sole survivor. The disaster has also drawn international attention, with tributes such as a minute of silence by British royals, as investigations continue and authorities work to improve future air emergency management procedures.
