Two Teens Found Dead on J Train Roof
Two teenage girls were found dead on the roof of an incoming J train at the Marcy Avenue station in Williamsburg, Brooklyn early Saturday around 3:10 a.m. and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating the deaths as likely subway surfing and said the victims have not been publicly identified while families are being notified. Service on the J line was partially suspended during the response and later resumed, and investigators are reviewing witness interviews and social media as the probe continues. NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow called the deaths 'heartbreaking,' urged parents and educators to warn youth that getting on top of a subway car isn't 'surfing' — it's suicide, and said transit workers who discovered the victims were shaken. City agencies have stepped up enforcement and prevention measures — including drone patrols, public-awareness campaigns, influencer PSAs and requests that social platforms remove glamorizing videos — after arrests and several recent fatalities and injuries among mostly teenage surfers. The incident has renewed scrutiny and legal pressure on platforms after prior deaths linked by families to viral content, including a wrongful-death lawsuit filed following a 2023 teen's death.
