News summary

Starting August 24, the MBTA will extend evening service by nearly an hour on all subway lines and several bus routes on Friday and Saturday nights, with final trips typically running between midnight and 1 a.m. This includes the Red, Orange, Blue, Green, and Mattapan lines, with increased frequency on Red and Orange Lines throughout the week and improved timing adjustments on the Green and Mattapan Lines. Popular bus routes such as 1, 22, 39, 66, 110, and Silver Line routes SL1, SL3, and SL5 will also have extended late-night service on weekends, while some routes like 23, 28, 57, 111, and 116 will see later service every night. In addition, the MBTA will offer fare-free rides after 9 p.m. on five consecutive weekend nights from September 5 through October 4. Ferry services on certain routes will also run later on Friday and Saturday evenings, including the Hingham/Hull and Charlestown/East Boston ferries. MBTA General Manager Phil Eng highlighted that these changes come after building up workforce capacity and are being implemented within the existing operational budget to better serve late-night workers and businesses.
