IDF Probe After Abuse Video; Top Military Lawyer Resigns
Israeli Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer‑Yerushalmi resigned after acknowledging she approved an August 2024 leak of surveillance footage that purportedly shows soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp. The leak prompted a police criminal probe ordered by the attorney general and an investigation by the State Attorney’s Office into whether personnel in the MAG’s office misled the High Court. Military prosecutors have charged five reserve soldiers over the detainee’s severe injuries, and the footage, aired by Channel 12, shows soldiers crowding around the detainee and using shields and a dog to block visibility before the detainee was taken for treatment. The inquiry has provoked political condemnation from right‑wing figures, and protesters reportedly stormed two military compounds when investigators sought to question troops; the IDF chief of staff has accepted Tomer‑Yerushalmi’s resignation. Tomer‑Yerushalmi said she approved the leak to counter what she called propaganda against the military’s legal corps while insisting alleged abuses still must be investigated, amid rights groups’ reports of multiple detention abuses during the Gaza war and the IDF’s assertion that such abuse is not systematic.
