Former Secret Service Agent Pleads Guilty to Cryptocurrency Theft
Anthony Joseph Evans, a 32-year-old former Secret Service agent from Tucson, pleaded guilty to stealing approximately $56,000 worth of cryptocurrency from the agency's secure evidence vault. While employed at the Phoenix field office, Evans accessed the cryptocurrency stored on a hard wallet, transferred it to his personal wallets, and converted most of it into U.S. dollars, which he used for personal expenses and debt repayment. He faces a potential sentence of up to one year and one day in prison, with sentencing scheduled for February 19, 2025. Additionally, Evans is required to pay restitution for the stolen cryptocurrency, including any appreciation in its value. The theft was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service's Cyber Investigative Section, and the case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona.
