Southern Indiana Attorney Arrested for Tax Evasion, Theft, Controlled Substance Charges

Jason Smith, a 45-year-old attorney from Seymour, Indiana, was arrested on multiple felony charges including corrupt business influence, tax evasion, and theft after an Indiana State Police investigation revealed he had not filed personal or business tax returns since 2018. Smith owns Smith Law Services and Floyd Harris Holdings, LLC, and the investigation showed he deposited over $3.8 million across these accounts from 2019 to 2023 without paying income taxes, using the funds for numerous personal purchases. In October 2024, a search warrant was executed at his home and law office where police found a suspected controlled substance, leading to an additional misdemeanor charge. Following his arrest by the Greenwood Police Department, Smith was initially held in Johnson County Jail and is set to be transferred to Jackson County for arraignment. The most serious charge, corrupt business influence, is a Level 5 felony carrying a possible sentence of up to six years in prison. Authorities continue to pursue the case as Smith faces a total of 11 felony counts and one misdemeanor count related to his alleged financial and legal misconduct.
