Mexico President Sheinbaum Pledges Justice After Uruapan Mayor Manzo Murdered

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was shot dead during a Day of the Dead event in Michoacán. Manzo, known for his outspoken criticism of organized crime and calls for stronger federal protection, had been mayor since September 2024 and wore a bulletproof vest due to threats against his life. Following the assassination, Sheinbaum convened an emergency security cabinet meeting and vowed to pursue "zero impunity and full justice," reaffirming federal support to local authorities. Two suspects were arrested and a third was killed at the scene, according to Mexican security officials. The killing highlights the ongoing violence faced by politicians in cartel-controlled regions, particularly in Uruapan, known as Mexico's "avocado capital" due to cartel-linked extortion in the avocado industry. The U.S. has condemned the attack and pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation against organized crime in Mexico.
