Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Highland Park

Highland Park police officers fatally shot a 59-year-old man early Friday morning after responding to a report that he was nearly struck by a vehicle and had stumbled into a nearby residence in the 900 block of Half Day Road. Officers knocked on the man's door, at which point he exited his home armed with a knife and failed to comply with commands to drop it. The man then charged at officers, prompting them to open fire. Paramedics arrived within minutes, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force has launched an independent investigation, and the area between Western and Compton avenues remains closed for the ongoing probe. Authorities have stated there is no threat to public safety and are asking residents to avoid the area.
