US Education Department Releases $5 Billion to Schools After Monthlong Freeze
The Trump administration has ended a nearly monthlong freeze on approximately $5.5 billion in education funding, which had caused significant concern among school districts ahead of the 2025-2026 academic year. This funding, part of nearly $7 billion approved by Congress, supports programs including teacher training, English language learning, after-school and summer activities, and aid for children of migrant workers. The freeze began on June 30 for a review by the Office of Management and Budget, which has now completed its assessment and authorized the release of all formula funds. Bipartisan pressure, including from Senate Republicans and Democratic states that filed lawsuits, played a critical role in pushing the administration to disburse the funds. The administration stated that the pause was to ensure alignment of the funds with its priorities, placing “guardrails” to prevent support for what it called a “radical leftwing agenda.” Lawmakers and local officials welcomed the release, emphasizing the importance of the funding for vulnerable student populations and educational programs nationwide.
