India Introduces Unified Curriculum for Himalayan Buddhist Monasteries to Counter Chinese Influence

India is set to introduce its first standardized school curriculum for Buddhist monasteries across the Himalayan belt, aiming to unify educational programs and instill a sense of national identity in the face of Chinese influence. This initiative, which will initially roll out in about 20 monasteries, is part of a broader strategy to counter the soft power that China has increasingly exerted in these regions. Maling Gombu, a representative of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, emphasized the importance of providing a nationally recognized education to the thousands of children residing in remote monasteries, ensuring they are prepared for life outside. The new curriculum will incorporate teachings in Indian history, language, and modern subjects alongside traditional Buddhist teachings. Developed over five years by the National Institute of Open Schooling, this curriculum seeks to equip students with essential knowledge while preserving their cultural heritage. Authorities hope this educational reform will better integrate Indian and Tibetan students into the broader national framework, especially in areas claimed by China.
