Nigeria Launches Free Emergency C-Section Initiative

Nigeria has launched the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) to provide free emergency Caesarean sections for low-income and vulnerable women, aiming to address the country’s alarming maternal mortality rate of 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births. Health Minister Muhammad Pate emphasized that financial barriers should not prevent women from receiving critical care, as over 40% of Nigerians live below the extreme poverty line. Eligible women must register with the public health insurance scheme, and community health workers will help identify those in need. While some positive trends in family planning have been noted, including an increase in contraceptive prevalence, unmet needs remain high, affecting maternal health outcomes. Support from organizations like the World Bank and WHO has been pledged to ensure the initiative's success. The program is expected to significantly improve maternal and child health across Nigeria, particularly in high-need areas.
