Cambodia, Thailand Plan General Border Committee Meeting in Malaysia with US, China Observers

The General Border Committee (GBC) meeting to address the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 4 to 7, 2025, after Thailand requested a neutral venue and Cambodia agreed. The meeting aims to de-escalate tensions following a recent five-day conflict that caused casualties and displacement. Cambodia proposed that Malaysia, the United States, and China participate as observers, acknowledging their roles in facilitating the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28. Both countries' military leaders have agreed on a framework for dialogue, with Cambodia emphasizing adherence to the ceasefire terms and cooperation between armed forces. Thailand is prepared for the negotiations and awaiting Cambodia's official invitation, while over 190,000 people remain displaced in evacuation centers, with authorities assuring their safety upon return. Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, is playing a key role in facilitating the peace process and repatriation efforts.
