Albanian Illegal Migrant Sentenced Life UK Killings While on Bail

Emiljano Kasaj, an Albanian national who was in the UK illegally and on bail from an immigration detention center, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a Mental Health Act order after deliberately killing two people and injuring another in Coventry in September 2023. Kasaj, who suffered from a severe paranoid illness likely schizophrenia, believed he was a king being blackmailed by political leaders in Albania and admitted to intentionally hitting the victims with his car during a "killing spree." Despite Kasaj's repeated failure to attend mental health and immigration appointments over nearly a year, the Home Office took no effective action. The victims included pedestrian Leo Moran and NHS worker Joel Carriedo, who died from injuries sustained when Kasaj struck them with his Mercedes. Graphic CCTV footage was shown during sentencing, revealing the deliberate nature of the attacks and Kasaj’s subsequent crash and arrest. The judge described the offenses as "horrendous" and emphasized that Kasaj’s mental health problems explained, but did not excuse, his actions.
