Egypt Opens $1B Grand Museum with Tutankhamun Treasures

Egypt officially inaugurated the long-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) on Nov. 1, 2025, a roughly $1 billion, two-decade project beside the Giza pyramids that was delayed by the Arab Spring, the pandemic and regional conflicts. The state-of-the-art complex houses over 57,000 artifacts — about 50,000 on display — and, for the first time since 1922, presents the complete treasures of King Tutankhamun together. A glittering opening ceremony attended by nearly 80 official delegations, including some 39 led by kings, princes and heads of state, featured drones, fireworks, pharaonic performances and international orchestras with specially commissioned music. President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi hailed GEM as “a new chapter,” urging it to serve as a platform for dialogue and knowledge and to help revive tourism and the economy. Officials call GEM the world’s largest museum devoted to a single civilization and project it will draw millions of visitors annually, offering expansive galleries, virtual‑reality exhibits, a scientific restoration centre and views toward the Pyramids.
