Diamondbacks Trade All-Star Suarez to Mariners in Major Deadline Deal
The Seattle Mariners made a major move at the 2025 MLB trade deadline by reacquiring slugging third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league prospects including Tyler Locklear. Suárez, who leads the majors with 87 RBIs and has 36 home runs this season, returns to Seattle where he played during 2022-23 and is expected to significantly bolster the Mariners' powerful lineup, which is already ranked fifth in MLB in home runs. Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto described this as the franchise's best lineup since his tenure began and expressed confidence in the team's potential to contend for the World Series. While the Mariners also acquired first baseman Josh Naylor and reliever Caleb Ferguson to strengthen the roster, there are uncertainties about how prospect Tyler Locklear fits into the current lineup given the presence of Naylor and injuries like Luke Raley's back spasms. Suárez's addition is viewed as a bold move to push Seattle from a playoff contender to a serious championship threat, especially with the team chasing a postseason berth for the first time since 2022. The deal is seen as a high-reward gamble given Suárez's free agency status after the season and his history of strikeouts, but his offensive production outweighs those concerns for the Mariners.
