US AI Workplace Use Doubles in Two Years, Adoption Widest Among Managers
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace has nearly doubled in the United States over the past two years, with 40% of employees now using AI tools compared to 21% previously, according to Gallup surveys. Frequent AI use, defined as several times a week or more, has increased from 11% to 19%, with white-collar roles such as technology, professional services, and finance leading adoption, while production and front-line workers report relatively flat usage. Managers and executives are more likely to use AI frequently, with 33% reporting regular use versus 16% of individual contributors, driven by the perceived need to improve efficiency and maintain competitiveness. Despite the rapid adoption, only 15% of employees believe AI or automation will replace their jobs within five years, and just 16% strongly agree that the AI tools provided are useful. Additionally, many organizations have integrated AI without clear strategies or policies, with only 22% of employees reporting a communicated plan and 30% noting formal guidelines, raising concerns about effective implementation and oversight. Meanwhile, Canadian AI adoption has also increased, notably in information, cultural, finance, and insurance industries, but slower uptake in resource-based sectors like agriculture and mining may limit economic growth opportunities there.
