Construction Begins on Tallest Mass Timber Tower in Milwaukee

Construction has officially begun on The Edison, a 31-story tower in Milwaukee that will become the tallest mass timber building in North America upon its expected completion in 2027. Developed by Madison-based Neutral, the building will include 353 to nearly 400 luxury apartments with a wide range of amenities such as a full-floor membership club, fitness center, health clinic, spa, pool, bathhouse, sauna, café, and organic grocery store. The building's structure will combine a concrete podium base with 24 upper floors made from mass timber, an engineered wood product praised for its sustainability, fire resistance, and aesthetic qualities. The project aims to reduce energy consumption and operational carbon footprint by 45% compared to traditional construction, aligning with Neutral’s focus on health, well-being, and sustainable living. City officials, including Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, emphasized the importance of adding housing and supporting neighborhood growth through this development. The Edison will surpass the height of Milwaukee's 25-story Ascent building, currently the tallest mass timber structure, and will be a landmark in sustainable urban residential construction in the Western Hemisphere.
