Lisbon Gloria Cable Car Derailment Kills 15, Injures 18
A tragic derailment of Lisbon's historic Gloria funicular railway has resulted in at least 15 deaths and around 18 to 20 injuries, with several victims in critical condition. The funicular, a beloved tourist attraction operating since 1885, connects the downtown area near Restauradores Square to the Bairro Alto district. The accident occurred on a steep track, causing the main carriage to overturn and crash into a building, with some passengers trapped and emergency responders actively conducting rescue operations. Portuguese authorities, including the Homicide Brigade of the Judiciary Police, have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause, while officials have confirmed that several foreign nationals were among the deceased. Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas and President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed deep sorrow, with the government declaring a national day of mourning and emphasizing the priority of supporting victims and conducting a thorough inquiry. Carris, the public transportation company managing the line, stated that all scheduled safety inspections had been followed and that emergency teams remain on site to manage the situation.
