Florida Governor DeSantis Signs Three Veterans Support Laws

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed three new bills aimed at enhancing support for veterans, particularly those in nursing homes, navigating benefits, and seeking mental health services. House Bill 797 simplifies access to long-term care by allowing certain skilled nursing facilities to designate beds for veterans and their spouses, reducing bureaucratic obstacles. Senate Bill 116 expands suicide prevention programs, includes specialized mental health training, and mandates a statewide plan to establish adult day health care centers for veterans. Senate Bill 910 introduces protections against exploitation during the benefits process by regulating advisors, capping payouts, banning referral kickbacks, and requiring background checks. Veterans at the signing event expressed appreciation for the efforts to simplify benefits access and prevent predatory practices. DeSantis emphasized Florida's commitment to remaining the most veteran-friendly state and linked the legislation to honoring veterans' service, coinciding with the 81st anniversary of D-Day.
