William H. Webster, Ex-FBI and CIA Chief, Dies
William H. Webster, the only person to lead both the FBI and CIA, has died at age 101. Appointed FBI director in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter during a period of scandal, Webster restored public trust and removed symbols of J. Edgar Hoover's controversial legacy. He served as CIA director from 1987 to 1991, overseeing the agency during and after the Iran-Contra affair and implementing reforms to improve transparency and discipline. Prior to these roles, Webster had an extensive legal career as a federal prosecutor, judge, and appeals court justice. He spent his final years in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Webster was widely praised for his integrity and lifelong commitment to the rule of law.
