Arkansas 3,000-Bed Prison Cost Rises to $825 Million

The project, initially estimated at $405 million, has increased due to current market conditions and facility requirements. This budget includes $750 million proposed in a recent appropriation bill and an already approved $75 million, with a total of $405 million initially directed by the state. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and state legislators emphasize the project's urgency to address overcrowding and bolster community safety. Despite strong local opposition, including a coalition formed to challenge the construction, the facility is expected to provide nearly 800 jobs upon completion.
