Chinese Aircraft Carriers Conduct Simultaneous Pacific Operations, Taiwan Alleges Expansionist Aim
Two Chinese aircraft carriers, Liaoning and Shandong, conducted simultaneous operations in the Pacific for the first time, a move Taiwan and Japan interpret as a clear political message signaling China's expansionist ambitions beyond its borders. Taiwan Defense Minister Wellington Koo highlighted that the carriers' crossing from the first island chain, which includes Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines, into the second island chain, extending to areas like Guam, underscores Beijing's intent to widen its military reach. Japan's defense ministry confirmed the carriers operated near remote southern Japanese islands, with Liaoning sailing within Japan's exclusive economic zone near Minamitorishima. China’s navy described the exercises as routine training without targeting specific countries. In response to these developments and ongoing regional military pressures, Taiwan is enhancing its defense capabilities, including receiving deliveries of advanced F-16V fighter jets from the United States to counter China's growing military power. These naval maneuvers come amid China’s increased naval and coast guard presence in East Asian waters since May, causing unease among regional capitals.
