TV presenter and consumer journalist Ore Oduba recently revealed he was emotionally scammed by fraudsters impersonating his idol, life coach and author Mel Robbins. Despite his background in educating the public on avoiding scams through the BBC show Claimed and Shamed, Oduba was deceived after expressing admiration for Robbins on ITV's Loose Women and social media, leading to fake correspondence from a fraudulent Mel Robbins podcast team. Oduba shared a tearful six-minute video on Instagram describing how he was invited onto the supposed Robbins podcast, one of the top 15 in the USA, and how the scam deeply affected him emotionally. He later realized the email was a hoax, noting details such as the misspelling of Robbins's name and the use of a generic Gmail account, with Robbins's PR confirming the invitation was fake. Oduba expressed feelings of shame and embarrassment, emphasizing that being scammed can happen to anyone, even those knowledgeable about fraud. His experience serves as a cautionary tale about the sophistication of online scams and the emotional vulnerability they exploit.
