More than 700 partners from top US law firms have filed an amicus brief supporting Susman Godfrey’s lawsuit against executive orders issued by the Trump administration, which target law firms over alleged discriminatory practices and efforts to challenge election laws. The Law Firm Partners United (LFPU), a newly formed nonprofit group, argues that the executive orders exceed presidential authority, violate constitutional rights, and threaten the independence of the legal profession. The orders in question focus on investigating and sanctioning firms like Susman Godfrey and Perkins Coie, particularly for their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. While some firms have reached settlements with the administration, several—including Susman Godfrey—have chosen to fight in court, contending the orders unlawfully punish firms for their advocacy and clients’ right to counsel. Judges have expressed skepticism toward the government’s arguments, suggesting the administration is outmatched by the heavyweight legal teams representing the firms. This legal pushback reflects broader concerns about the rule of law and judicial independence in the face of executive action.
