Nearly 20 Kenyan Officers Resign in Haiti
Nearly 20 Kenyan police officers serving in Haiti have submitted resignation letters over the past two months, citing pay delays and poor working conditions as their primary reasons. The officers, part of a 400-strong contingent deployed for a UN-backed anti-gang mission, have received no response to their resignations and continue to serve under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has denied allegations of pay delays, stating that officers were paid through October, a claim disputed by officers who report they last received payment in September. The mission has been hindered by funding and staffing issues, with a significant number of promised personnel from other countries yet to arrive. Despite government assurances of improved conditions, officers express frustration over financial hardships impacting their families back home and feel their communication is being controlled to prevent negative reports. The situation in Haiti remains dire, with gang violence escalating and a humanitarian crisis deepening.
