Colorado Springs Woman Charged in Uber Driver Murder

Khayla Dawson, 27, was arrested in Colorado Springs and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, motor vehicle theft and tampering after 38-year-old Uber driver Jeremy Campbell was found stabbed to death and his body dumped in a field in northern El Paso County. According to arrest affidavits, Dawson ordered an Uber late Oct. 26 saying she wanted a “joy ride;” the trip began about 11:45 p.m. and was canceled just before 3 a.m., Campbell was reported missing early Monday, deputies found his bloodied vehicle at the Polaris Junction apartments and his body near Eastonville Road and Guy Ranch Point. Dawson told detectives she fell asleep in the back seat, then woke to the driver allegedly attempting to sexually assault her and said she stabbed him in self-defense; investigators say the vehicle drove through a barbed-wire fence into a field, lingered about 90 minutes, then returned to her apartment. Officers recovered knives in the field and noted a missing butcher knife from Dawson’s kitchen, and authorities say they linked her to the scene using Uber trip data, phone pings and other physical evidence. The victim was reported to be paralyzed on his right side; the investigation and charges are ongoing.
